Lachlan Monaghan, Principal Dancer at Birmingham Royal Ballet

As a child, Lachlan was initially drawn to tap dancing before being encouraged to explore ballet. He trained at The McDonald College and, in 2009, won the prestigious Sydney Eisteddfod Ballet Scholarship, which allowed him to train for two weeks at The Royal Ballet School in London.

This experience led to a scholarship offer to continue his training at the Royal Ballet for two years. In 2010, he earned a bronze medal at the Genée International Ballet Competition.

While still a student, Lachlan performed with The Royal Ballet, taking on roles in Christopher Wheeldon’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and as Mercutio in Kenneth MacMillan’s Romeo and Juliet. He considers Mercutio one of his most rewarding roles, reflecting that “living his incredible story and then having Romeo squeeze your lifeless body after your death is heart-wrenching and unforgettable.”

In 2012, Lachlan joined the Birmingham Royal Ballet. After rising through the ranks of First Artist and Soloist, he was promoted to Principal Dancer in 2023.

His repertoire includes iconic roles such as Prince Siegfried in Swan Lake, Prince Florimund and Bluebird in The Sleeping Beauty, Colas in La Fille mal Gardée, and The Prince in The Nutcracker. He has also originated roles for renowned choreographers, including David Bintley, Jessica Lang, Didy Veldman, Jack Lister, and George Williamson.

Lachlan is A versatile artist, an accomplished tap dancer, pianist, and photographer. He holds a BA in Business (Honours) from The Open University.
