Alum | Serena Green

Dancer Serena Green (Class of 2011) grew up in Sydney, where she trained in all dance styles under The British Ballet Organisation at Macquarie Dancers with Lisa-Maree and Elizabeth Derby. Her talent was soon recognized, and after being introduced to Allan Cross and Josephine Jason, Serena was offered a scholarship to The McDonald College and a position in the Premier State Ballet Youth Company, where she performed lead roles in Sleeping Beauty and Swan Lake.

In 2009, Serena’s exceptional abilities were further acknowledged when she was awarded the Female Scholarship in McDonald’s Performing Arts Challenge (Sydney Eisteddfod) in the Ballet Scholarship category (16-19). At just 17, she moved to London after receiving a scholarship to The English National Ballet School, marking the beginning of her international ballet career.

While at the English National Ballet School, Serena had the opportunity to work with the English National Ballet Company during their 2011 season of Nutcracker. Following her time in London, Serena traveled across Europe, auditioning and taking classes with various companies. Upon graduation, she moved to Brno, Czech Republic, where she received a full contract with Národní Divadlo Brno (National Theatre Brno). She spent nearly five years there, performing Principal and Soloist roles and touring through Germany, Slovakia, and Italy.

In 2017, Serena joined Queensland Ballet under the artistic direction of Li Cunxin and was promoted to First Artist in 2019. After nearly six years with Queensland Ballet, Serena retired in April 2023, delivering a memorable final performance as ‘Myrtha, Queen of the Willis’ in Queensland Ballet’s production of Giselle.

Throughout her career, Serena had the privilege of performing works by renowned choreographers such as Jiri Kylian, Kenneth MacMillan, and George Balanchine. Some of her most cherished roles included the Snow Queen in The Nutcracker, Big Swans in Swan Lake, Shades Pas de Trois in La Bayadère, Lead Harlot in Romeo and Juliet, and Dark Angel and Russian Girl in Serenade.

In addition to her performing career, Serena has spent the last two years as an adjudicator with The Sydney Eisteddfod, working closely with General Manager Annette Brown. She has judged sections of Classical Ballet, Contemporary, Lyrical, and Demi Character across various age groups, and has gained experience in conducting in-house dance studio examinations. Serena also runs her own business, SMG Artistry, through which she coaches Classical Ballet, conducts Stage Makeup Workshops, and offers Clinical Pilates Coaching.

With over a decade of professional experience in the Classical Ballet industry across Australia and Europe, Serena believes she has the knowledge and expertise to be a successful adjudicator. She is dedicated to providing constructive and inspiring feedback to motivate and guide the next generation of dancers as they pursue their own careers in the performing arts.
