Hugo Chiarella, a proud 2003 alumnus of The McDonald College, stands as a shining example of this potent blend. Today, he’s not just making waves but creating a seismic impact in London, donning multiple hats as a producer, writer, director, and performer.

Hugo’s journey post-McDonald College has been a tapestry of artistic endeavors. Currently holding the esteemed position of Resident Director for the West End production of ‘The Phantom of the Opera,’ his trajectory to success began with his role as Resident Director for the UK tour of ‘Les Miserables.’

Beyond the stage, Hugo has contributed significantly as the Development Producer for Fuel, championing artist development and fostering a slew of new works. His creative touch extends to the acclaimed web series ‘As Actors – Manila,’ recognized at prestigious events like the Rio Webfest, Armacord Arthouse Film and Video Awards, and The LA Cinefest.

Hugo’s impact is not confined to international stages. In Sydney, he served as Assistant Producer for The Darlinghurst Theatre Company, showcasing his commitment to the local arts scene.

As a writer, Hugo has crafted compelling narratives, penning the book and lyrics for productions like ‘DreamSong’ (Arts Centre Melbourne, Theatreworks, VCA), ‘Evie May’ (Hayes Theatre, New Musicals Australia), and providing lyrics for ‘Guilty Pleasures’ (Blue Saint Productions, Hayes Theatre).

Hugo’s presence on stage has been equally notable, gracing audiences as Grantaire in ‘Les Miserables’ (West End, International Tour, Australian Tour), portraying Mendel in ‘Fiddler on the Roof’ (Australasian Tour), and adding a touch of magic as the host of the children’s TV series ‘Magical Tales: Surprises.’

Beyond the realm of traditional theatre, Hugo showcases his versatility in sketch comedy with ‘I’m With Stupid,’ featuring on ABC, ABC2, Funny or Die, and The Big Smoke.

Having graduated from McDonald College, Hugo furthered his education with a BA in Musical Theatre from the Victorian College of the Arts and an MA in Creative Producing from the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama. His academic journey stands as a testament to the seamless fusion of talent and education.
