Alum | Dr Katherine Bolton
Dr. Katherine Bolton, a multifaceted professional with a diverse background in science, education, and medical genetics. Katherine’s journey began at The McDonald College, where she immersed herself in the Classical Ballet stream from 1985 to 1990, ultimately graduating as Dux.
Post-graduation, Katherine pursued her passion for molecular biology and genetics, earning a Bachelor of Science with first-class honors from Macquarie University in 1995. Her career unfolded as a Research Assistant at the University of Sydney’s Molecular Genetics Group and the Children’s Medical Research Institute’s Embryology Unit.
In 2001, while stationed in Victoria with her Army Officer husband, Katherine achieved a Graduate Diploma of Education from Charles Sturt University. She went on to teach science and math in various high schools across Victoria and New South Wales.
The arrival of her two daughters prompted a shift to work as a Technical Officer in Anatomical Pathology at Gosford Hospital for 11 years. During this time, Katherine undertook a Ph.D. at the Hunter Medical Research Institute, focusing on genetic variation in breast and endometrial cancer. Her achievements included being a runner-up in the University of Newcastle’s “Three Minute Thesis Competition,” publishing multiple papers, and presenting at national and international genomic and cancer research conferences.
Since 2017, Katherine has served as a Research Governance Officer for the Central Coast Local Health District, progressing to the role of Research Manager in 2020. Her office is based at the Central Coast Research Institute on the Gosford Hospital campus.
Adding to her family’s legacy at the College, Katherine’s daughter Gabrielle, fondly known as Gabby, joined the Ballet Stream in Year 9 in 2020. Gabby excelled, passing her RAD Advanced 2 ballet exam and captivating audiences in Giselle during year 11. Graduating from the Musical Theatre stream in 2023, Gabby’s talents earned her a Callback for HSC Dance.
Looking ahead, Gabby is set to embark on a new chapter in Melbourne in 2024, commencing a Diploma in Performing Arts at Patrick School of the Arts. Her dream is to dance as a Rockette in NYC, complemented by a profound interest in humanitarian work. The Bolton family’s connection with the arts continues to flourish, with Katherine’s rich background serving as an inspiring backdrop for Gabby’s promising journey in the world of performing arts.
