Year 9 Explores World War I Through Theatre

This term, our Year 9 students welcomed Glen from Troubie Theatre Company to our Blackbox stage for an unforgettable theatrical experience. Troubie, renowned for its interactive and engaging approach to history, once again delivered a compelling performance, blending artistry, humour, and historical insight.

The play, World War I: Fighting the Kaiser, transported the audience to a military hospital, where the story of a soldier named Gassy unfolded. Glen’s dynamic performance, portraying multiple characters, captivated the students as they witnessed Gassy’s emotional and physical journey through the Great War.

Reflecting on the performance, Year 9 student Alicia Dooley shared:
“The performance by Glen from Troubie Productions, titled WWI Fighting the Kaiser, delivered an impactful experience expressed through humour and artistry. Portrayed in a military hospital, Glen played many different characters, with ‘Gassy’ being the focal point. This performance was truly outstanding and offered us a glimpse into the physical and emotional struggles faced by soldiers during World War 1. Gassy’s story showed us how deeply the trauma impacted him, especially after the loss of his closest friend Bill, who he kept alive through memories of them together. From his enlistment in Australia, being sent off to Gallipoli, and his harrowing experiences in the Western Front, Glen’s performance depicted the raw grief and pain that soldiers like Gassy endured. Glen also incredibly displayed the mental scars of soldiers which often went unnoticed and untreated. The impact on us as an audience was undeniable, as it reminds us of the cost of war on us physically and psychologically. This performance was able to connect us emotionally to the suffering of soldiers who fought for their countries, often at the expense of their well-being.”

Through this creative and heartfelt performance, Glen not only illuminated the realities of World War I but also inspired thoughtful reflection among our students. We are grateful to Troubie Theatre Company for bringing history to life and providing a meaningful learning experience for Year 9.
